NVWA strengthens information position with Blueriq platform

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) receives about 30,000 reports of possible violations of food and consumer product laws each year. Notifications are registered, assessed and handled by Blueriq-designed application Basisvoorziening Meldingen (BVM), after which the notification goes further into the organization via 'case-oriented working'. "BVM takes over a lot of manual work, leaving more time for thinking," said Product Owner Patricia van Schaik of the NVWA.

The scope of NVWA's work is vast and complex. Most people know the NVWA from inspections in the hospitality industry, or the supervision of animal welfare in the meat processing industry, but the NVWA does much more. The organization deals with safety risks in 23 different areas: from fairground attractions to cosmetics, from supermarket products to electrical equipment.

The NVWA conducts inspections - whether based on reports, scheduled or random - and, based on the inspection results, can then impose an administrative measure or initiate criminal proceedings, for example. It can also be appealed or objected to by the company subject to the measure.
So a report can take a long journey through the organization; all the more important that reports are handled accurately and adequately. This has been done since 2020 with the Basisvoorziening Meldingen (BVM), a Blueriq application.

'Most reports come to us through the website,' explains Patricia van Schaik. 'Citizens who suspect a violation in our area of responsibility report their complaint via an electronic form. That information goes directly into the system, where employees from the Contact Center process the reports. This is BVM's first advantage; they no longer have to retype complaints that come in via the website. Online completion is done via a web form. In BVM, the Contact Center employee also verifies data such as the Chamber of Commerce number, zip code and house number; this is made extra easy by links to basic registrations and registers such as the "Trade Register" for company data. This also saves time. And more importantly, it saves errors! Correct processing of the basic data is essential. After all, an error in the report can disrupt the entire process. But that automatic verification has another advantage; if several complaints are made about the same company, the system links them together based on address data. This gives the report a higher priority. This contributes to our risk-oriented supervision.
